Animal Friends

This past week we said goodbye to our lovely apartment in Akumal and all the wonderful and unique features it brought us: families of monkeys swinging through the trees, a refreshing pool to help break the mid-day heat, a great deck for watching the sun rise, a washer and dryer that sometimes worked, stray dogs to chase us on our morning runs. (Okay, maybe the last one was a little stressful.) 

We are heading over for one last week of diving in Cozumel before we return to the States (!!!) and this seemed like a good time for a little photo tribute to some of the animals we've met during our time in Akumal.

All of these animals have names - some of them given by their respective humans, some of them given by me. 

Lizzy enjoys the sunshine at the Tulum Ruins.

Taco has a favorite chair at Turtle /bay Cafe.

Hugo belongs to Arja, our dive instructor, and is my favorite dog in Mexico.

Mr. Tickles wanted to live in our bedroom, but we asked him to leave.

Slinky is a boa constrictor, but kindly didn't squeeze me too hard.

Taj lives at cenote Tajma Ha and helps with pre-dive checks.

Bookworm will try to scratch you if you interrupt her nap, but then cuddle like it never happened.

Beanbag has life figured out.

Sunshine is Beanbag's neighbor and has also got life figured out.

Spin Cycle likes to hang out at the laundromat.

Fluff belongs to a food truck in Tulum.

Pete and her sister, Pete, are heavier than they look.

Sara the monkey will stand on your head in exchange for sunflower seeds


Booking.com belongs to the owner of our hotel and yes that is his real name.


Sneaky Dog will get the snacks, no matter what.

Hello, here we go

So this is it, y'all...  We're leaving tomorrow at 4:30am to catch a flight from Boston to Cancun. From there we'll rent a car and drive about an hour south along the edge of the Yucatan Peninsula to a little flat we are renting in the town of Akumal, our home for the next three months.  Most people come to this part of the world to lay out on the beach, soak up the sun, go clubbing, and drink liver-decimating amounts of tequila, all of which we intend to do. (Okay, we'll probably go easy on the clubbing and tequila.) But in addition to all the relaxing stuff, we will also be taking three technical scuba diving courses that will put us on the path to becoming certified cave divers. More on that in later posts. A different sense of place

    January and I packed our things and said goodbye to our cozy little third floor apartment in Pistoia. The heat of the last few weeks had finally broken and the sky was dark and threatening rain as we dragged our suitcases down the four flights of stairs to the sidewalk.        We found a taxi to take us to the train station and the taxi driver, an older man with thinning hair and the broad, barrel shaped body that you find on so many Tuscan men of a certain age, refused to let us help load our heavy bags into the back of the car. A Day In the Cavern

After a lovely two week excursion to Cozumel to celebrate my dad's 75th birthday (Happy Birthday, Pop!) with the rest of the family, January and I came back to the mainland and jumped straight into the second half of our Cavern course. It was four long days of running guidelines and practicing skills in zero visibility. One of the sites we used for training is a cenote called Orquidea. It's set way back off a jungle road behind an unmarked gate that you can't enter without the key to the padlock. Many of the cenotes that we use for training are close to the highway, have gift shops and snack stands, and just feel pretty touristy. The glory days of trekking through the jungle with your gear to reach the cenote entrance are mostly gone now. Orquidea, however, has a bit more of that old school feel to it.
